Absent Friends

To all of Drew’s friends and extended family – and there are many of you.

As most of you know, Drew has been dealing with a progressively worsening heart condition. Perhaps some of you don’t, actually – he was never one to have others have to deal with his issues, always focusing on other people instead. Over the last five years or so, he has been in and out of Johns Hopkins for treatment. The last four years or so, his stamina was greatly reduced, and the last two years he suffered from chronic pain and very limited mobility. Despite all of this, he would always light up a room with his energy and joy. The way he engaged others was almost magical. No one ever forgot interacting with Drew. As one of his cousins puts it – “Drew never met a stranger.”. Despite his lack of stamina and pain, he was always up for family activities and events, and his presence was always felt. Drew always had energy for friends and family, and he was utterly devoted to Cailin and Barb.

At 6:10 pm, EST, on December 8, 2020, we lost this precious soul. He passed peacefully, with Barb at his side. Cailin was able to spend a magical hour talking to Drew, telling Drew stories the way Drew always did for her. There are not words to describe the void Drew leaves, but I’m certain he would not want us to remember him with sorrow for his passing. Certainly, we will grieve, but I’m certain he’d rather we all remember what he brought to our lives.

If you have a good Drew story – and we all have many – please write it up in a card for Cailin and Barb, to the address below. In many ways, Cailin is Drew’s legacy and this will remind her of how special her dad was.
