Absent Friends

Edith Adams McDonald Maruyama

Edith Adams McDonald Maruyama
January 9, 1938 - April 15, 2022

The date of departure of those whom we love is impressed upon us forever. Edie left us on Good Friday.

Edie was born in Summit, New Jersey, (exit 48), but her life was full of the whole world. Due to the occupations of her father (Frank Adams) with the USO, her first husband (Richard McDonald) with the U.S. Navy, her surviving husband Xavier, as a professor of physics, and her own peripatetic wanderlust, she lived in and traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Japan, Washington State, the Monterey Peninsula, Europe, Turkey, Greece, Italy, the Danube River, Egypt, and Southern Africa, among others. Her marriage to Xavier was in Gretna Green, Scotland.

Edie is survived by her husband, Xavier Maruyama, daughter Debbie Bennett, stepchildren, Michelle and Ted Maruyama, three grandchildren Ashley, Colleen, and Katie, great grandchild Alora, and her brother Frank Adams (Colleen).

Edie was a care giver, living with and taking care of her grandfather, her father, her mother (Francis Adams), her husband (Richard), and her uncle (Smitty). All those around her enjoyed her comfort. Now she will join them in heaven.

If you wanted something done, you asked Edie. She had full careers as a school teacher, a real estate banker, and as a volunteer for many organizations. Among them were the Pacific Grove High School Alumni Association, the Monterey History and Art Association, Scottish Society of Monterey, Sottish American Military Society, American Legion, SPCA, Youth Music Monterey, First Night Monterey, and Carmel Valley Association. She was owner and publisher of the Pacific Grove Hometown Bulletin for half a decade from 2008 to 2012. She touched many lives.

She was a survivor. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2015, and was in her second remission. She also faced COPD and many other challenges. She spent many days in the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), off and on. The wonderful CHOMP staff greeted her by first name as soon as she appeared.

Her demise was a surprise to many of us because she had always come back to give us her love over and over again, unconditionally. Edie gave of herself to all of us. We will miss her.

At a later date, we will gather together to celebrate her life.
